Planning for your first bridal appointment? Have no idea what to bring, who to bring, or what you should do to prepare? Don’t worry – I’ve got you covered!
A few weeks ago, I had my very first bridal appointment! I was so lucky to walk in to the appointment with a (reasonably) open mind and find the perfect dress thanks to the lovely ladies at I Do Bridal Couture here in Baton Rouge. After having such an amazing experience with them, I wanted to reach out and get their tips and advice for all first-time wedding dress shoppers. I was lucky to have the manager, Lauren, get back in touch with me and share her wedding dress shopping story! Here’s what she had to say:
Have An Open Mind
“Like most brides, I was very excited but also very nervous. Our advice is to come into the store with a completely open mind! Obviously it’s great to have an idea of what you want but be open to trying anything. The majority of brides come in thinking that they want a certain style and that completely changes when they start trying on gowns. However, in my case, I knew exactly what I wanted and I Do had my dream gown. So it is different for every bride!”
Bring An Intimate Group Of Friends/Family
“Also, my biggest advice is to bring a small intimate group of people with you to try on gowns. Some brides love having multiple opinions and sometimes that works out great, but the majority of the time, brides get so conflicted and confused because too many opinions are coming their way. We have seen so many brides light up in an dress and then as soon as they step out of the fitting room, someone upsets the bride and it starts to change her mind. Trying on gowns is 100% about the bride and we strive to make that a reality for our brides, so I personally recommend a smaller group of people to shop with you!”
For me personally, I brought my mom, my future mother-in-law, my maid of honor, and my matron of honor. My fiance’s mother also ended up bringing her 2 daughters (one is a freshman in college, the other in middle school), and while I didn’t initially plan on having them there, I didn’t mind! Thankfully the people I brought with me were encouraging regardless of what I walked out in. They only unanimously didn’t like 1 out of the several dresses I tried on, and only said so after I said I didn’t like it. Overall, I had a wonderful group with me!
“And lastly, have fun with it! Yes, it is okay to have nervous excitement but every bride has been dreaming of this moment since they were a little girl. Have fun, love every second, and enjoy these special moments, they are ones to remember forever!”
I had an absolute blast, as did the rest of my party! It was nice being able to celebrate finding the perfect one with a glass of champagne afterward, and knowing I was able to share the experience with my close friends and family.
Bring A Few Things With You
This is from my own experience, and I definitely wish I would have brought a few extra things with me! For some reason it didn’t occur to me to bring a strapless bra – I thought they would have some there like other larger bridal salons. While they luckily had little bra inserts, I would have been pretty embarrassed to come out in sheer-topped dresses if they hadn’t. So be sure to bring a strapless bra or pasties with you just in case! And while we’re on the subject of under-things…be sure to wear comfortable nude underwear that you don’t mind having someone else see! While my attendant didn’t help me get in and out of the dresses, she did help me zip up into them. So she got to see her fair-share of my underwear. Definitely worth keeping in mind when you’re getting dressed in the morning!
And while I wasn’t planning to wear any special veil or shoes (or anything else), if you are planning to do so be sure to bring it if you can! It will assure that your dream dress actually goes with whatever else you’re planning on wearing, and you won’t have to worry about it later.
Thanks to the wonderful ladies at I Do, I found a beautiful Monique Lhuillier gown and a gorgeous heirloom veil! I honestly can’t express how impressed I was with the whole experience and how much I enjoyed it. There’s certainly a reason why they’re consistently one of the best bridal salons in Louisiana (and in the US)! The owner, Ramsey, was there for my appointment and was such a help in picking out my perfect dress. Knowing she hand-picks each and every dress to have in her shop just makes it even more special. So thank you to all the ladies at I Do, and a special “thank you!” to Lauren for your advice!
