Ah, Summer. Sunshine, blue skies, and…..dry skin? Frizzy hair? Melting Makeup? Especially here in Louisiana, summer can be a little rough. The humidity + heat combo down here melts makeup off faster than you can blink, makes my typically stick-straight hair frizzy, skin burnt and dry….I think you get the picture.
So I have to put in a little extra effort to keep my skin hydrated and glowing, and keep the heat in mind when I’m applying my makeup.
Because I tend to either go without makeup completely or go out with very little on, I have to have my skin looking good. I love to rotate between multiple cleansers depending on what I need at that particular time, but I always have a deep-cleansing and a scrub facial cleanser. This year (because my skin has been so dry), I also added a hydrating cleaner into my rotation to help.
Lately my go-to scrub has been this Neutrogena Naturals Purifying Pore Scrub. I decided to give it a try after my usual option was out-of-stock at my local store, and I absolutely fell in love. It’s gentle enough to not irritate my sensitive skin, while actually managing to do it’s job as a scrub. Fine line there. Plus is smells amazing.
Next I have my double-duty Neutrogena Clear Pore Cleanser/Mask that I just keep coming back to time and time again. It deep-cleans and leaves your face feeling fresh, but it doubles as a wonderful mask too!
My latest addition to my collection is CeraVe’s Hydrating Cleanser. My last trip back home I managed to forget my face wash, and used my sister’s instead – which happened to be this – and was amazed. It doesn’t feel like it would be cleaning anything all that well, but it took off every speck of makeup that I had on. And it didn’t leave my skin feeling dry afterwards like some other facial cleansers do. So this one will be staying for a while, especially during those summer months when my skin is a little dry.
After my face is all clean, I love using my Pixi’s Glow Tonic, especially in the mornings. After hearing nothing but raving reviews, I decided to give it a shot. Hands-down the best toner I’ve ever used. It instantly brightens my skin and leaves it feeling fresh.
Next up is moisturizer. Lately, my go-to has been this Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel, which moisturizes my skin without leaving it feeling oily. It also helps reduce breakouts and smells amazing, which is always a good thing!
But in the event those pesky breakouts do occur, you need Mario Badescu’s Drying Lotion. My sister recommended it after listening to me complain about a few breakouts I had, so I decided to give it a try. And boy does this stuff work! It is a bit pricey, yes, but you only need a drop of it at a time so it lasts forever. This stuff works some serious wonders!
I tend to go foundation-free in the summertime, but will occasionally use a tinted moisturizer. My go-to is Clinique’s Moisture Surge CC Cream, which provides just enough coverage to even out my skin without being as heavy as my usual foundation. Plus is has sunscreen and a moisturizer built-in, which is perfect for summer! I also love using Benefit Cosmetics High Beam liquid highlighter to add that extra glow when I need it.
Next I have an amazing dupe for my beloved Urban Decay Makeup Setting Spray – NYX’s Makeup Setting Spray. At less than half the cost of UD’s, it-was a no-brainer to try. Recommended by, yet again, my sister. After having used it now for several nights out, I think it works just as well (if not better) than UD’s. It definitely keeps my makeup in place even in the heat and humidity!
But, being so pale, I need to add some color to my skin, and this Hikari Tango Blush in Pink Cheek is perfect. It’s bright, stays on, and blends like no one’s business. I received it in one of my Ipsy bags months ago, and have been using it ever since!
Let me start off by saying I love Urban Decay, especially their eye shadow palettes. So I might be a bit biased! But when I saw UD’s new Naked Heat palette, I definitely wanted to get my hands on it. You might have seen it recently in my Instagram feed/story, because I am obsessed! I love this palette way more than I thought I would, and the colors are gorgeous. I’m definitely more of a neutral palette kind of person, which is why I love all of UD’s palettes – they are all tinted neutrals with an occasional pop of color. Naked Heat is a red/orange/copper palette, which I never thought I would like, but I do.
I will say that while their glittery/non-matte colors have definitely improved over the years in terms of pigmentation, their mattes are just like all of their other palettes – a bit chalky, and not overly pigmented. But again, being someone that just wants a hint of color in their otherwise neutral routine, it doesn’t bother me at all.
Again, living in the south with our suffocating heat and humidity, I don’t tend to do much with my hair. Mostly because anything I do it just going to be ruined the second I step foot outside, but I have found a product that works wonders! Enter Aveda’s Smooth Infusion Naturally Straight. You only need a pea-sized amount to keep the frizz at bay, plus it smells amazing and works better the more you use it. Sounds like a pretty amazing product to me!
I find that Aveda products, while a little pricey, last for a while and actually work. They also have a wide variety of products to fit your needs – from straight to curly, oily to dry, they have something for everyone!
