Cheers to the new year! I know I’ve been on a bit of a break the past few weeks, and with all holiday and end-of-the-year stress I definitely needed it. It’s given me the time I desperately needed to take a step back from everything and get myself in the right place to start 2018 off strong. But now I’m back and ready to blog! And after going through the results of my last reader survey, a lot of you wanted to see more fashion/beauty related posts. Now, I’m certainly no fashionista – I’m more of a skinny jean and t-shirt (or just pajamas tbh) kind of person, but I do love my beauty products so why not share more of that with all of you?! And to start, why not give you what you’ve been asking for aaaaand all my recent beauty favorites all in one go?
So first thing’s first – let’s talk about these palettes! Ever since I heard about the Jaclyn Hill x Morphe palette I have wanted one so badly. But I just kept putting it off by telling myself I already had plenty of shadow palettes and I didn’t need another. When I finally broke down and went to buy it, it was sold out! Then sold out almost immediately when it came back in stock. Twice. So when I saw it was in stock AND on sale for Black Friday? You bet your sweet behind I bought one! Along with the 35P (Color Plum) and 35B (Color Glam) palettes while I was at it.
Jaclyn Hill x Morphe
Let’s start with the fan-favorite shall we? The Jaclyn Hill x Morphe palette. There had been SO MUCH talk and hype about this darn palette that I thought it was too good to be true. Thankfully it lived up to the hype and has quickly become one of my favorites to use! The majority of the palette is warm toned, with a few bright blue/greens to add a bit of variety. And while it reminds me a lot of my Urban Decay Naked Heat palette, there are more shades to choose from. Plus, at only $38, it’s cheaper than UD. HOWEVER.
First off – the packaging. The other Morphe palettes are made of thick black plastic and have a lid that snaps shut while this one is made with a shiny white durable cardboard with just a top flap. While it seems sturdy enough, I definitely wouldn’t want to ever travel with it in fear of it popping open and breaking everywhere. And I’m extra careful to make sure my bathroom counter is dry before I set it down.
I find that while the foils are absolutely gorgeous and super pigmented, the mattes are a little on the chalky side. They definitely don’t have that buttery feeling the foils do, and while most of the mattes are very pigmented, a few (like the ones in the bottom row) aren’t very pigmented at all. Which means an extra dab of shadow for some of the colors, but overall it isn’t too much of an issue if I’m using primer. But again – at only $38, you’re getting a large variety of quality shadows.
** Side note: All swatches are in the same order as the palette, done dry and without primer**
35B – Color Glam Palette
Next up we have the 35B – Color Glam palette. I bought this one on a whim with the intention to turn those bright colors into some killer liquid eyeliner. And while I definitely have done that a few times now with great results, I’ve also (surprisingly) used the shadows as shadows. Turns out these bright AF colors aren’t nearly as bright on your skin, so they make great shadows to blend with! Just like with the Jaclyn Hill palette, some of the mattes are a bit chalky, but with a primer it isn’t a big issue. And having this variety of colors for only $23? Totally worth it.
35P – Color Plum Palette
And finally we have the 35P – Color Plum palette. If you read my last Currently Loving post, then you know I had a little problem with this one. When it arrived, a few of the shadows were broken. Thankfully Morphe has some wonderful customer service, because I got a replacement in no time! And it turned out to be my favorite one of all. Obviously I like the color purple (it’s my blog color after all!) and I really like cool-tone neutrals, which makes this palette perfect for me! There’s a great mix of foil and matte shades, and I really like the variety of colors in general. But just like with the other palettes the mattes are a bit chalky, but I do find them to be more pigmented than the others.
Recent Beauty Favorites
Now for my winter beauty favorites! You might remember these from my last Currently Loving post, but I thought I would talk about each one a little more.
First up – Two Faced Born This Way concealer. Like I mentioned in a previous post, I switched from Benefit’s Boi-ing concealer. While I liked it, I found it got cakey really quick and would settle into the lines around my eyes. So I decided to give this one a try after a nice lady at Sephora recommended it. Which honestly, isn’t that how most of us end up with expensive stuff in our baskets? Thankfully this one did the trick – it stay put forever, blends like a dream, and doesn’t crease up. It is a little oily/shiny, so definitely use a setting powder with this one!
Next I have my holy grail of eye shadow primers – NARS Pro-Prime Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base. This stuff is seriously amazing! My eyeshadow stays put all day – no creasing, no falling. If I manage to rub my eye on accident? Still stays put. I will 100% be keeping this baby around for a while!
Then there’s Inglot’s Duraline, which is what I use to turn all those gorgeous eyeshadow shades into liquid eyeliner. It can (apparently) also be used as a primer, but I didn’t like using it for one at all. It was like putting straight super glue on my eyelid, and blending any shadow (even with a base layer of shadow) was pretty much impossible. So I’ll just use it to make some awesome eyeliner. When mixed with shadow, it isn’t superglue-y at all, but the resulting liner will stay put all day!
And finally there’s my new primer – the Korres Greek Yoghurt Smoothie Priming Moisturizer. Like I mentioned in a previous post, I had been using a Smashbox primer. And while it works really well to reduce the look of pores and fine lines and makes my foundation last all day, it clogs up said pores pretty badly. But primer is one of those things that I tend to not use every day, so I didn’t give it too much thought until I went to go pick up more for Black Friday and my sister recommended this Korres one. It has been great for this crazy winter weather we’re having. My makeup stays put and my skin isn’t as dry-feeling at the end of the day. Plus it doesn’t clog my pores, which means I can use it every day if I want!
But don’t think I forgot about the holy grail of face powders! I raved about it in my Currently Loving post, and even though it’s not pictured here I have been using this Laura Mercier Setting Powder like crazy. Even at 4am my makeup looks like I just put it on – mostly thanks to this stuff. It doesn’t crease, doesn’t cake, and stays put!
Do you have a Morphe palette? If so, what do you think? Any recent beauty favorites? Let me know!
