My fiance and I aren’t big V-Day celebrators. In fact, after working in restaurants, the ~magic~ + ~romance~ of Valentine’s Day is simply lost on us. We generally have to work on the 14th anyway, and after dealing with literally hundreds of people trying to book a last-minute table or being asked to help with no less than 5 proposals, the day loses its charm really quick. Now, this doesn’t mean we don’t celebrate at all, just that we don’t celebrate on the actual day. And we definitely don’t go all out!
So if you’re like us and aren’t thrilled by the idea of heading to a restaurant on the 14th, stay tuned! This year Mardi Gras is on Feb. 13th, which means that the whole week and weekend before Valentine’s Day will be pretty insane. So you can bet I’ll be hanging out at home reading and cuddling with my cat the following weekend. This introvert has to charge her social batteries sometime! So our date night will probably consist of ordering pizza, opening a bottle of wine, baking brownies, and watching Netflix. Or if we’re feeling extra fancy, we’ll actually cook a fancy dinner like steak instead of ordering takeout.
So if you know you’re not in the mood to head to a restaurant but still haven’t quite figured out what to do, here are a few ideas!
Head To A Mardi Gras Parade!
At least if you live anywhere in the South, odds are there’s going to be several parades going on the weekend before and the weekdays before Valentine’s Day. If parades are your thing, you shouldn’t have a problem finding one to go to!
Make a Pillow/Blanket Fort and Watch Your Favorite Movie
We actually did this a few months ago, and it certainly made us laugh and smile as we got everything all set up. Unfortunately for us, my cat thought that the top of our fort was a magical new surface, and as she jumped on it, it not only knocked over our TV (shattering the screen), but also a nice bottle of red wine all over our light colored carpet. They say patience is a virtue, but all I have to say is thank goodness for OxyClean and having a shampooing vacuum!
Cat antics aside, making a little fort was a blast. It made us both feel like kids again, and was something that is really easy that you can do just to make you laugh and smile. Set up your fort, grab some blankets and all of your favorite snacks (and a bottle of wine), put on a movie and have a fun evening! Just make sure your cat is in the other room….
Cook A Nice Dinner At Home
Do you and your s/o like to cook? Or want to try your hand at cooking together? Then plan a nice dinner and go nuts! My fiance and I always seem to end up cooking steak, grilling fish, or roasting pork for our “fancy” meals, but if you don’t have a go-to, find something on Pinterest and give it a try. If it ends up a disaster there’s always takeout. Or go crazy and have a fun breakfast for dinner night! Change into your coziest PJs, scramble some eggs, make pancakes or waffles, and squeeze some fresh OJ for mimosas.
Cooking not your thing? Have a wine + cheese night instead! Put together a charcuterie board with all your favorite fancy cheeses, some prosciutto/salami/other meats, fresh fruit, crackers and bread and open up your favorite bottle on wine. Side note: it’s actually one of our favorite no-cook meals!
Instead of going on a date with just you two, gather up some couple-friends and head out for a fun couples night! Grab dinner somewhere (bonus if it’s Happy Hour right after work!), head to a cute bar for some drinks and chat the night away. Catch a movie or even go bowling!
Instead of making crazy dinner plans, why not meet up for lunch instead? Take a little extra time and go to your favorite lunch place, or try something new! And the best part? Most places have a cheaper lunch menu, so it’s an affordable date option!
Nerf Gun War – Loser Buys Dinner
You know those little Nerf guns kids love? Pick up two, leave one for your s/o when they get home with a note, then game on! Loser buys dinner.
Weekend Away or Staycation
Use the weekend after Valentine’s Day for a little get-away! Or if you don’t have time for a full-out weekend away, try a staycation instead. Go do tourist-y things, or just relax with a couples massage and a spa day. Get a hotel or stay home without distractions, sleep in and just spend time together!
Recreate Your First Date
Instead of finding a new place to try, why not re-create your first date instead? Bonus points if you get cheesy and greet your s/o at the door with flowers!
